RE: Game Tutorial Updated - RNBW - 08-10-2022

All links on the home page have been updated. All images, links, and directions have been updated in Task 1 to reflect using the Phoenix site and resources to install QB64 and the tutorial asset files.

I need to go through all the other tasks and update the Wiki links to point to the phoenix Wiki as well.

I'm currently looking into using something like WordPress to bring this tutorial into the modern era. I currently use Notepad and Kompozer which is a big pain in the ASCII to use when it comes to updating things. I've never been great at HTML and a WYSIWYG solution would be ideal. I've looked at WordPress and Wix. Any thoughts?

Perhaps the tutorial could somehow be incorporated into the Phoenix Wiki?

@TerryRitchie
I have just produced the QB64PE Wiki in CHM, PDF, WORD and HTML formats (sounds clever - it’s all from the HelpNDoc editor).  At the moment, your Game Tutorial is accessed via internet links.  However, for my own use, I am entering your Game Tutorial into HelpNDoc to produce (for my own use) a CHM file.  This will look very much like what I have produced for the QB64PE Wiki, which is a more modern text based format.  I am only at Task 5 at the moment, but have all the other tasks loaded in but not in the format that I want.  Ideally, I would like to incorporate it in the QB64PE Wiki CHM file, but I would need your permission to do that.

I use Dav’s IDE for coding and he has said that he would include a link in his next update.  I would like to see a link in the QB64PE editor, but I have not received an answer to my request yet.

You can see the format of my version of the Wiki in the link from the Wiki section.  Let me know what you think.  I shall continue with it for my own use, but won’t include it in the Wiki without your permission.

RE: Game Tutorial Updated - Jack - 08-10-2022

hello RNBW
why don't you share the chm?
I think it would be valuable to have a chm help file for quick reference, especially if you also include TerryRitchie's great game tutorial Smile

RE: Game Tutorial Updated - RNBW - 08-10-2022

@jack
There is a CHM  of the Wiki Inn the link in the Wiki Discussion section.  Just download the zip file using the link and you can have your choice of CHM, PDF or Word.  There is also a link for an HTML download.

I can't include Terry Ritchie's tutorial without his prior permission.

Anyone is free to use the tutorial as they wish. Yes, you have my permission. The more formats the tutorial is in the better in my opinion. Thanks for taking on this task.

Also, I am currently rewriting the tutorial on Google Sites and updating things as needed. You may want to wait until I'm finished to see what has changed. The content will be 95% the same I'm sure, but for instance I made Task 1 and Task 2 prerequisites now and Task 3 is now the first lesson, which I also named to Lessons instead of Tasks. I've had some good feedback over the years about improvements to the tutorial that I've kept in a text file that I'm now incorporating into this rewrite.

Thanks for the response.  I will hold off for a while.  Probably most of what I've done to date won't be wasted.  I'm now on Task 7.

No, it won't. Like I said, 95% of the content will be the same. I'm only changing some of the terminology others have pointed out needs fixed, spelling errors, code errors, and such. All of the old links to qb64.org will also be fixed too. Some of the lessons don't have "Your Turn" projects so I'll be adding those too.

I would have done all of this back in 2020 when I was rewriting the site then but I got into a pretty dark funk for a while. Covid hit a few family members hard, job situation, family issues, etc.. hit all at once and I went "off grid" for a stint to collect my thoughts. All better now. Smile

See the file in this link TRGameTutorial.  This is as far as I have got at the moment.  I am part way through Task 7.  It's just to give you an idea of what I am doing.

I'll be slowed down by having to correct the Wiki CHM Help File that I produced.  But that's another story.

@TerryRitchie
Hi
your learning programming by making games is wonderful.
I found it and downloaded it at the time that QB64 was yet SDL (version 0.95 I think)...
and you gave me the track to go on and power up my  starting skills about programming!
Againg and always THANKS!

All you can see of good in my code is coming from your lessons about what is coding and what is programming an application /game.
All you can see not clear or efficacy is coming from my habits that I must develop.

You are most welcome :-) Yeah, I think I wrote the first version of the tutorial back in 2013, the good old SDL days when Galleon and Clippy were still around. What ever happened to Ted by the way? Is he still active in any BASIC forums?
