Using the Debug feature - PhilOfPerth - 09-22-2022

I am curious about the Debug function. I have set watch points and then run my programme - what next?
There is no output of results visible, and no message to say the Debug has operated. Should I get a file with run results, or what?  Confused

RE: Using the Debug feature - Pete - 09-23-2022

Fell developed the debugger feature, but sadly, when he dumped the project, and the .rip site, he also took a lot of his YouTube vids down; the debugger one included.

I tried it out last year, but never really got into using it. As fast as QB64 compiles, I just debug without it.

Possibly Steve, when he is feeling better, may have some experience with it he can share with you. After all, I know he must be constantly debugging his stuff all the time... Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

RE: Using the Debug feature - SpriggsySpriggs - 09-23-2022

You'll add the $DEBUG metacommand to the top of your code to turn on debugging. Then, while debugging is happening, it should show some text at the bottom of the IDE telling you how to control the execution of the code. The watchlist should show up as well.

RE: Using the Debug feature - mdijkens - 09-23-2022

I'm a big fan of the debug feature
Set breakpoints or stop command and run with F7 or F8.
Add watch variables with F4 during debugging.
Really helpful.
Now on holiday with only phone, but can maybe make a video about it later...

RE: Using the Debug feature - Pete - 09-23-2022

A vid would be nice to have up again. Also, I like the option to have the watch list sent to the console. Honestly the debug ability in QBasic was great, but that was interpreter. Still, QuickBASIC and PDS, which were QBasic with some added bells and whistles and the ability to make stand-alone exe files, could still be run in interpreter mode.

These days I just use a variable "betatest%" to show PRINT statements containing variables, values, and to help explain what is going on behind the scenes. If the betatest% variable is set, those print statements appear as the program runs and sleep when appropriate. If the variable is zero, no reporting is done during a program run.

Pete

RE: Using the Debug feature - mdijkens - 09-23-2022

Agreed.
What I still miss most compared to PDS is the possibility to select an expression in your code and add the expression to the watchlist

RE: Using the Debug feature - PhilOfPerth - 09-23-2022

I wasn't aware of the betatest% option, @Pete, but it sounds like what I do at the moment: when I find an unwanted result from my programme, I add a line at that point like "locate 22,1:print "A% is": a%;"b$ is ";b$ : sleep 2 which shows what those variables are at that point. I was hoping Debug would sort of allow this in a simpler way. The only useful part of Debug to me at present is the list of all variables that it provides.
@mdijkens I tried the f8 and f7 and f4 options, but couldn't get any meaningful results - the screen blanked, and then it seemed to be waiting for something, I don't know what!

Here's an example of how I use my betatest% method in a square root string math example. Try it with betatest off and on.

Code: (Select All)

There is no output of results visible, and no message to say the Debug has operated. Should I get a file with run results, or what?  Confused

Did you check out the Wiki page for $DEBUG? Note that only variables added to the watchlist will be displayed, press F7 to start debugging paused on the first instruction, then F4 to open the watchlist dialog. After adding the variables of interest close the dialog, then proceed with F6/F7/F8 as needed. If you've set a breakpoint, then you may also press F5 as usual to quickly run your program until the breakpoint. Note that breakpoints must be set on lines containing real code, breaks on comment lines have no effect and your program just runs over it, as the compiled program doesn't know the comment lines, those exist in the source text only.

Wait, we have a Wiki? I know, I know, removing Pete from my buddy list as we speak...

We do have a Wiki, and it's a thing of beauty. Great new format.
