All this talk of fractions also reminds me of something my mother once said, when facing this same problem. My father asked her once, "Honey, if you divide a pie up into three pieces, each piece is 33% the size of the original. Right?"
And, of course, my mother agreed.
"So what happens when you add 33% plus 33% plus 33%? You get 99%," my father told her, smugly. "What happened to the last 1%?"
"It's stuck on the knife you cut it with," was mom's answer, without missing a beat!
